Brewery/Distillery Description: In 2015, Paul and Mai Nakayama went on their honeymoon to Mai’s hometown of Amami, Japan, a remote archipelago known for its breathtaking natural beauty.

A series of adventures and incredible coincidences led to discovering Amami’s unique craft spirit known as kokuto shochu, made from artisanal black sugar.

They launched Nankai Shochu in 2017, dedicated to sharing their newfound passion for shochu and sake with friends across the U.S.

Product Description: Nankai Imo Black is an imo shochu produced by Ooyama Jinhichi Shoten, exclusively for Nankai. Produced from local kogane sengan potatoes and local Ibusuki spring water, it is rested in 150-year-old clay vats before distillation for an aromatic and elegant spirit.

Tasting Notes: Fruity and floral with hints of roasted yams on the nose; chestnut, lychee and spice on the palate.

Nose: Fruity and flora aroma with notes of roasted yams and orange peel.

Palate: Smooth mouthfeel with notes of chestnut, lychee, and spice.

Color: Clear

Finish: Elegant finish with caramel and chestnut.
